Katherine Winterstein and Inessa Zaretsky executed the Phelpsian task of performing all ten Beethoven violin sonatas over the course of the weekend. Each sonata has its own distinct character and works to map Beethoven's stylistic evolutions, thus making a performance cycle mentally taxing. The experience of hearing one sonata in relation to its siblings can be revelatory - this is the case with the two opus 30 sonatas, which were performed back to back Saturday evening. They illustrate Beethoven's "ying-yang" method of composing pieces of contrasting character simultaneously. Each concert proved rewarding. One can only hope the duo's achievement this past weekend inspires more ambitious musical undertakings.
